The Source - This is a photo I took in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a
cold dreary rainy February day, which I think changes the mood of the scene,
and may have some bearing on how you interpret it. It is a statue at the
New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts. My photo makes the woman look as though she
is kneeling on the wall, but you can see the real context in the image
below, taken from the Museum's website ( mfasantafe.org ).

The Mayan shaman has come to the Temple of Kukulcan, The Feathered Serpent (also known as Quetzocoatl by the Aztecs and Toltecs) to make an early harvest offering and to pray for rain. For once, the god himself has put in an appearance, though not in an affable mood. I doubt if he is a vegetarian. But his stone effigy seems more perturbed than the shaman does.
